June Return Plan

May 28, 2020

Dear Families,

Thank you for participating in the survey that was sent to families on Thursday, May 21st.  We appreciate you taking the time to convey your intentions for your child(ren) regarding the re-opening of schools beginning June 1. Please note: June 1st is a scheduled Professional Development Day at Lakeview and our return to school will begin on Tuesday June 2nd.  We are currently in the process of ensuring that necessary preparations have been addressed to ensure a safe return for students and staff next week. If you have indicated in the survey that your child won’t be returning to school and your circumstances change, please contact me directly before sending your child to school.

The safety of students and staff remains our number one priority, and measures will be in place to meet the requirements of provincial health and safety guidelines for schools. To accommodate these health and safety measures, including physical distancing, classes will be limited to a small number of students attending at any one time.

The model being implemented in Burnaby’s elementary schools reflects a typical 9:00am-3:00pm school day structure, with students being assigned to a specific cohort to accommodate the smaller number of students in attendance at any one time. Most students will attend school according to their assigned cohort. Children of Essential Service Workers and students with disabilities/diverse abilities have the opportunity to attend school up to 5 days per week, upon request by parents or guardians.

As in-person attendance is optional, in-school instruction will supplement the already established remote learning which will continue until the end of this school year. Students who do not attend in class will continue to be provided with the quality remote learning opportunities.

The daily schedule for June is attached. Students in Kindergarten to Grade 5 will attend a cohort, two days per week on Monday and Tuesday and students in grades 6 and 7 will attend one of two cohorts, one day per week on Tuesday or Thursday depending upon which group they are assigned (Grade 6 and 7 students your teachers will contact you to inform you of your cohort group).  Wednesdays are designated remote learning days and schools will not have in-person instruction for any students with the exception of students of Essential Service Workers and students with disabilities/diverse abilities whose families have requested this support.

Please also read both the attachments from the School Board and Fraser Health outlining the following procedures in greater detail.

Here is our daily routine: Starting June 2nd

*Please note 2 class changes:

  • Wu’s class will be combined with Ms. Knapp’s class working out of Ms. Knapp’s room
  • Patterson’s class will be combined with Ms. Taylor/Ms. Bedirian’s class working out of Ms. Taylor/Ms. Bedirian’s room

Classroom line up:  All students to line-up, social distancing, in assigned areas as listed.

  • Classes with outside door (Sinclair, Woolley, Knapp/Wu) will form a line in marked area outside of classrooms
  • Annex classrooms will use two separate entrances. Chatt lineup at regular entrance with line extending into asphalt area.  Taylor/Bedirian/Patterson lineup at west side of building and use door closest to classroom.
  • Keirstead/Cirillo – lineup and enter at schools front door
  • Migliuri – lineup and enter at center doors leading out towards picnic tables
  • Chung/Suh – lineup and enter at end doors leading out towards field

Entry:  Teachers will open doors and ask each student the Daily Health Check questions.  If student answers Yes to any of these questions he/she will not be allowed to attend on this date and will need to return home. (Please read this section carefully – Appendix B of Elementary HS attachment).  As students enter one by one they will setup at their assigned desk, wash hands and begin day.

Recess and Lunch adjustments:  To limit the number of students on the grounds at any one time and to allow for thorough cleaning throughout the day we will have half the school taking a 10:30 recess and the other half taking a 10:45 recess.  This pattern will repeat at Lunch with half the school eating lunch from 12:00-12:30 and then proceeding outside while the other half will proceed outside first from 12:00 – 12:30 and then eat lunch from 12:30-1:00.

We are grateful for your partnership and patience and we look forward to welcoming students back into the school.

Take care,

Brad Winterlik
